Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, it combines natural beauty with rich cultural value. Banff is the highest town in Canada, yet remains highly accessible and welcoming to tourists. The park is home to over 30 lakes, with the most iconic being Lake Louise and Moraine Lake.

Be prepared for an early start — 5 to 6 a.m. is an ideal time to begin your hike and enjoy some solitude before most tourists arrive for their mountain adventure. Keep in mind that even at 5 a.m., you’ll need a printed National Park Pass to enter. Passes can be purchased online or at the park entrance and cost $11 per adult (children under 17 enter for free). Rental rates are $170 + GST for one hour or $160 + GST for half an hour.

Be sure to have your bank card ready in advance, as cash payments are not accepted. Its turquoise waters and forested surroundings are a dream for both photographers and nature lovers.

Since private vehicles are no longer permitted on the road to Moraine Lake, it’s essential to plan ahead and coordinate with the local shuttle or public transportation schedule.

If the shuttle options feel too expensive and you’re considering hiking to the lake instead, prepare accordingly: bring plenty of water and pack your patience. Along much of the route, there is no cellphone coverage, Wi-Fi, drinking water, or restrooms — but the breathtaking view at the end makes the journey worthwhile.

Overall, I recommend spending at least 2–3 days in Banff to see the major attractions and truly get a feel for the area. Keep in mind that accommodations within the park can be quite expensive, so if you’re looking to save a bit, consider staying outside the park boundaries. The money you save can go toward a boat tour, souvenirs — or whatever your heart prefers.

Whether you’re looking to refresh your Instagram feed or enjoy outdoor adventures like mountain hiking and lake kayaking, Banff National Park has it all.
